WHERE TO START?
Analyze your current home to see what options are available and get approximate prices for each option:
This is the starting point for the home addition process and will usually require professional advice from either a licensed contractor, architect or architectural technologist. Viking offers a free consultation at your residence to help you during this phase of process. We will examine your home and we will explain which options are available to you when it comes to extending the first floor or adding living space on the second floor of your home.
Options will vary and can depend on numerous aspects such as the current lay-out of your home, municipal by-laws and regulations, distance to neighbouring property lines and your budget. Everything is to be taken into consideration at this stage.
During this initial consultation you can expect to receive approximate budget prices for each option available to you. To have a realistic budget for your project at this stage is essential, because your next step in the process (plan drafting) will require a certain financial investment. The worst scenario is to have invested in your technical drawings, before having an idea on costs, only to find out later on that the project is way over your budget.
At the end of this meeting, you should have a good idea of the type of addition you want to have and the costs associated with it.
Once you have a good idea on the type of addition, you will have it is wise to visit your municipality’s local office. There, you can speak with a representative who can re-confirm that there will be no issues going forward.
